MSc Tropical Medicine & International Health

One year full-time or split-study over two years


This programme is for doctors interested in practicing medicine in tropical and low- and middle-income countries. It offers a wide choice of modules and includes the opportunity to take the Professional Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (DTM&H).

Students with a prior DTM&H, or holding 60 Masters level credits from the DTM&H (East African Partnership) may apply for exemption from Term 1 via recognition of prior learning.

Objectives
By the end of this programme students should be able to:

  • understand the causation, pathogenesis, clinical features, diagnosis, management, and control of the major diseases of tropical and developing countries
  • demonstrate understanding and skills in diagnostic parasitology, microbiology and entomology
  • understand and apply basic epidemiological principles
  • apply and interpret basic statistical tests for the analysis of quantitative data
  • analyse and synthesise research findings for clinical and disease control decision making and to critically evaluate their effects
  • understand the role of basic and applied research underpinning clinical and international public health practice demonstrate ability to synthesise and communicate relevant medical knowledge and principles at an appropriate level to patients, health care professionals, colleagues and other groups
  • demonstrate understanding of the role of basic and applied research underpinning clinical and international public health practice, at an appropriate level depending on the individual student’s choice of modules

Project report
You will complete a research project on a relevant topic of your choice

Entry requirements
Students must have a degree in medicine and be registered medical practitioners. Preference will be given to candidates who have at least two years of experience working in clinical medicine (in any country) with recent professional experience in a relevant discipline.

English Language Requirements
As part of the application process, applicants are required to demonstrate how they meet LSHTM’s minimum English Language requirements.
