MSc Epidemiology

Epidemiology is a key discipline for understanding and improving global health. Epidemiological methods underpin clinical medical research, public health practice and health care evaluation, investigation of the causes of disease, and evaluation of interventions to prevent or control disease. This programme covers both infectious and non-communicable disease epidemiology.

Objectives
By the end of this programme, students should be able to:

  • demonstrate advanced knowledge and awareness of the role of epidemiology and its contribution to other health-related disciplines
  • choose appropriate designs and develop detailed protocols for epidemiological studies
  • enter and manage computerised epidemiological data and carry out appropriate statistical analyses
  • assess the results of epidemiological studies (their own or other investigators’), including critical appraisal of the study question, study design, methods and conduct, statistical analyses and interpretation

The modular structure of the programme allows you to tailor the programme to your specific interests.

Compulsory modules:

  • Extended Epidemiology
  • Statistics for Epidemiology & Population Health
  • Epidemiology and –omics
  • Clinical Trials
  • Epidemiology in Practice
  • Study Design: Writing a Study Proposal
  • Statistical Methods in Epidemiology


Elective modules include:


Project report
You will complete a research project on a relevant topic of your choice.

Entry requirements

  • a second-class honours degree from a UK university, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard, in a relevant subject or
  • a master’s degree in a relevant subject, or
  • a professional qualification appropriate to the programme of study to be followed


In addition, students will need to show evidence of advanced numeracy skills. Experience in a health-related field is desirable.

As part of the application process, applicants are required to demonstrate how they meet LSHTM’s minimum English Language requirements.
