MSc Electronic Engineering: Euromasters

University of Surrey
Guildford, Surrey, UK
Full-time or Part-time Study

12 months Full-time; 60 months Part-time.

Why Surrey?
The Electronic Engineering (Euromasters) MSc mirrors the two-year Masters programme structure that is common in the USA, and is an ideal stepping stone to a PhD.

Programme overview
Our MSc Euromasters programmes are designed for electronic engineering students and professionals with an interest in gaining further qualifications in advanced, cutting-edge techniques and technologies in the selected pathway, with enhanced project, as well as training in transferable skills including business awareness and management. Some industrial placements will be available.

Here is a list of Electronic Engineering (Euromasters) MScs offered:

  • Communications Networks and Software [CNS]
  • Medical Imaging [MED]
  • Microwave Engineering and Wireless Sub-systems Design [MWW]
  • Mobile Communications Systems [MOB]
  • Mobile and Satellite Communications [MSC]
  • Multimedia Signal Processing and Communications [MSP]
  • Computer Vision [CV]
  • Satellite Communications Engineering [SCM]
  • Signal Processing and Machine Intelligence [SPM]
  • Electronic Engineering [EEP]
  • Space Engineering
  • Nanotechnology and Nanoelectronic Devices [NAN]

The advanced taught technical content, which is identical to the corresponding standard one-year MSc programmes, is in sub-disciplines of electronic engineering closely aligned with the internationally-leading research conducted in the four research centres of the Department of Electronic Engineering. The main distinguishing feature of this two-year programme is the professional training component (which cannot normally be offered by the standard technically-focused one year MSc) with the potential of gaining experience from working in industry.

The MSc Euromasters complies with the structure defined by the Bologna Agreement, and thus it is in harmony with the Masters programme formats adhered to in European universities. Consequently, it facilitates student exchanges with our partner universities in the Erasmus Exchange programme. A number of bilateral partnerships exist with partner institutions at which students can undertake their project. Current partnerships held by the Department include the following:

  • Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain
  • Technische Universität Dresden, Germany
  • Brno University of Technology, Czech Republic
  • University of Prague, Czech Republic
  • Universität di Bologna, Italy
  • Universität Politècnica de Catalunya, Barcelona, Spain
  • Universita’ degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, Italy

Module overview

Programme structure

The MSc Euromasters format is assembled from existing programmes and modules. Year 1 of the programme consists of eight taught modules subject to the validated patterns of study for the standard MSc format, totalling 120 credits. Year 2 is constituted by two Engineering Professional Studies (EPS) modules (30 credits) plus a 90 credit project. There is the option of taking the first semester EPS module in Year 2 with a 3-6 months placement in industry. The Department will use its contacts with industry to help students to find suitable placements.

Year 1
Standard MSc programmes taught modules within the validated patterns of study. The programme of study in Year 1 finishes in June.

Year 2
There are two possible programme structures for Year 2.

  • Students not going to industry start their project in Semester 1 of Year 2. The project is worth 45 credits in each semester, and finishes at the end of Semester 2 in June. In addition to the project, students take the professional studies module EPS1 in Semester 1 (15 credits) and EPS2 in Semester 2 (15 credits)
  • Students going to industry for three – six months start their project in Semester 2 (45 credits) and continue over the summer period, finishing in September with the standard MSc cohort. In addition they take the professional studies modules EPS1P in Semester 1 (15 credits), and EPS2 in Semester 2 (15 credits)

Entry requirements
A good honours degree in mathematics, computing, physical sciences or engineering disciplines is required. Our minimum entry level is a 2.2 from a good UK university or overseas equivalent. Relevant industrial experience will also be considered.
