Full-time Study
This is a one-year course designed to introduce postgraduate students to all aspects of sustainable chemical practices, with nine months dedicated to a research project in a green chemistry area. Both the taught and research components will be multi-disciplinary in nature with input from several world class departments from Imperial (including Chemical Engineering and the Centre for Environmental Policy). The students meet with the Course Director every week to present and discuss their work in an informal atmosphere. Critical skills are developed by group discussions of key papers in Journal Club sessions led by an expert in the area. The course is now one of the largest MRes courses in the Department and typically has 18-20 students from as many as 12 different countries.
Why Green
Chemistry?
Chemistry is involved in all aspects of life and is fundamental to countless
products, industries and technologies. This power also gives it the potential
to seriously harm the environment if not properly designed and controlled.
Green chemistry therefore strives to achieve the efficient, sustainable use of resources in the safe production of environmentally-benign, non-toxic products. Increasingly stringent legislation and public awareness means no company can overlook their environmental impact, while the problem of fossil fuel dependence looms ever larger. Green chemistry is a relatively new concept but one that is currently booming worldwide.
Tuition fees and scholarships
There are opportunities to gain scholarships in a competitive fashion. These will provide funding towards tuition fees and/or living expenses and will be granted on the basis of academic merit and excellence of the applicant.
