MSc Public Health

One year full-time; half-time or split-study over two years


This programme aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to enable them to address public health challenges through research and practice. It covers the whole breadth of public health, encompassing low-, middle- and high-income countries. It reflects local, national and international public health agendas, and provides the opportunity to explore public health issues in depth with academics, researchers and practitioners.

After a series of compulsory core modules, students will be able to focus on a specialised stream of study, including the option to follow a general public health programme.

Structure
The decision about which stream of study to follow will depend on each student’s needs, with the final choice being made during Term 1. The streams are:


In addition to compulsory stream-specific modules, you will be able to choose modules from a wide selection covering all aspects of public health.

Compulsory modules:

  • Basic Statistics for Public Health & Policy
  • Basic Epidemiology
  • Issues in Public Health
  • Principles of Social Research


You will also take two further modules, selected from the list below. Depending on your choice of stream, one of these may be compulsory.

  • Environment, Health & Sustainable Development
  • Introduction to Health Economics
  • Health Policy, Process & Power
  • Health Promotion theory
  • Health Services


Project report
You will complete a research project on a relevant topic of your choice.

Entry requirements

  • An upper second-class honours degree from a UK university, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard, in a relevant subject or
  • a master’s degree in a relevant subject, or
  • a professional qualification appropriate to the programme of study to be followed


This programme also requires evidence of ability in mathematics post-16 education. Preference will be given to applicants with relevant work experience.

English Language Requirements
As part of the application process, applicants are required to demonstrate how they meet LSHTM’s minimum English Language requirements.

Please apply via the LSHTM online application system. Applications should be made to the MSc Public Health (as opposed to a particular stream) in the first instance.
