There is a substantial continuing need for specialist engineers to service the nuclear industry for the operation and decommissioning of the existing reactors, and a growing worldwide programme of building new reactors. Against this background, The University of Manchester is offering postgraduate programmes in Nuclear Science & Technology to help supply the industry with expertise level to help fill the predicted skills gap.

Entry requirements
The minimum academic entry requirements for a Masters programme will be a Lower Second UK honours degree, or international equivalent, in a relevant science or engineering discipline. For applicants with some years’ industrial experience, a lesser qualification may be acceptable.

Nuclear Technology Education Consortium (NTEC)
NTEC offers part-time and full-time postgraduate courses in Nuclear Science & Technology. An extremely wide range of topics is available, from Reactor Physics to Nuclear Waste Disposal. NTEC was established in 2005 following extensive consultations with the UK nuclear sector, including industry, regulators, the Ministry of Defence, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, government departments and the Cogent Sector Skills Council. The seven UK universities and higher education institutions in the Consortium provide flexible postgraduate training for the nuclear sector with the breadth and format of the training designed to meet the UK’s projected nuclear skills requirements in decommissioning and clean-up, reactor technology, fusion and nuclear medicine.
We are flexible in the way you complete your modules, you can either attend the one week taught module or take the distance learning version, as long as you complete the correct number of modules required for the award you are registered for.
Individual subjects are presented in ‘short course’ modular format, providing excellent access to the programme for engineers and managers in full-time employment who wish to advance their skill and knowledge base.
As a full time student, although you will only be in actual teaching for 8 weeks of the year, there will be much more work for you to do than this. Four weeks before each module, you will receive pre-course reading and possibly pre-course assignments to be completed before the start of the module. There are also post course assignments to complete for the modules and revision for the exams. At points of the year, you will be working on pre-course work, post course assignments and revision at the same time.
